Signs of a toxic atmosphere

Be wary of rooms where insults are normalised, where a couple of users set the tone and silence everyone else, or where strangers DM you straight away asking for photos or personal details. Harassment dressed up as banter and pressure to ‘prove’ you're real are red flags.

Protect your privacy

You don't need to share your number, location or surname to be liked. Hide your phone number in settings, use a username instead of your legal name, and take your time before moving to calls or meetups. The most common mistake is trusting too fast; real friendship is never in a hurry.

Breaking the ice without overdoing it

Walking into a group and dropping ‘hi, is anyone here?’ rarely works. Better to reply to a conversation already going or comment on the group's topic: that's how you blend in naturally. Ask about other people's interests instead of only talking about yourself, and don't take it personally if a chat doesn't click. And don't DM everyone the moment you arrive: in a group, trust is earned in the open before things get personal.
